Teachers Strike looms as school opening dates nears

 

Kenya National Union of Teachers have announced that the teachers strike is on even as the school opening dates are  nearing.

The Ministry of Education on Monday announced new opening dates for schools countrywide to give parents and students time to travel to their destinations after the Christmas/New Year festivities.

In circular dated December 24, 2018, the ministry pushed the date for all primary, secondary and teachers training colleges by a day to January 3, 2019.

Schools were scheduled to open on January 2, 2019.  Teachers today  have however been brought to  attention that the strike action commences exactly on the opening date of the new term.

In a press statement, the Kenya National Union of Teachers highlighted  the issues that they are addressing which are the reasons behind their strike

  1. Teachers’ Promotion$;
  2. Delocalization/Tran$fers;
  3. Performance Contracting $Y$tem;
  4. Teachers Professional Development Module$.

All teachers were also informed that it is their solemn duty to stand up in solidarity to defend the interests of the teaching service in Kenya.

“Further, . NO TEACHER should report for the new school term until the strike is called off formally by the Secretary General through a vote of the NEC as provided for in our Constitution.The strike is not only legal and constitutional but is human right entitlement that we must all participate in.” reads  statement in part
