Uhuru clarifies on the affordable housing levy imposed on Kenyans

Among President Uhuru Kenyatta’s big four agenda, affordable housing is among the key items that his government is determined to achieve.

According to the affordable housing agenda the President aims to eradicate the issue of poor housing in the country. The affordable housing agenda aims at making most Kenyans to become home owners.

But late this year most people raised complaints on the levy fees.

Workers are to beĀ  deducted 1.5 per cent from their pay monthly to create a fund to finance a new low-cost housing fund after President Uhuru Kenyatta reinstated the levy that will chop salaries by up to Sh5,000.

The creation of the fund is meant to help the government realize the goal of delivering half a million affordable housing units in five years.

The move paves the way for the establishment of a State-backed Kenya Mortgage Refinancing Company meant to address the demand side of the housing market by offering funds to the mortgage industry.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in the state of the nation address in Mombasa with journalist he dismissed that notion that the 1.5% charged is a tax. He said that the money charged is a saving for every Kenya that will help them be home owners.
