Kenyatta says ‘Chinese taking over Mombasa Port’ is pure propaganda.

President Kenyatta has assured  Kenyans that the issue of the take over of Mombasa Port by China is pure propaganda.

Kenyatta mentioned that the government is ahead of its payment schedule for the SGR loan and there is no cause of alarm.

The news in the previous weeks had raised a lot of concern by Kenyans as some had already voiced out to urge the government to terminate the contract to save the port.

Speaking during the round table from state House Mombasa, Kenyatta said that he is confident that Kenya’s debt is for infrastructure development, that will not only benefit the current generation but future generations too.

“In less than 6 years, since I came into office, we have implemented many projects” he added

The President also reacted to the huge debt that Kenyans are seemingly worried about as he said that according to him, the issue of debt is not about incurring debt, it’s about how you use it.

“Are you using that debt for development? To expand your GDP? To open up your country? When we talk about debt it must be viewed in comparison with the GDP”  he noted

The head of state also addressed the  issue of how people keep asking him about his frequent trips to China.

The President gave his reasons saying that that China offers affordable financial packages and therefore the needs of Kenyans are met in so many ways.

The President’s clarification on the Mombasa Port comes a week after the Office of the Auditor General denied reports indicating that it released an audit report warning that Kenya risks losing the port of Mombasa over the multi-billion shilling loan borrowed from China for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
