Somalia’s militant Islamist group al Shabaab has shot dead execution-style three men.
It accused two of the men of working for the army. The third man killed was an elderly clan leader who helped choose candidates for the 2016 parliamentary elections.
The killings took place in front of a crowd in Mubarak village in southern Somalia, media linked to al Shabaab reported.
The militants, who are affiliated to al-Qaeda, control much territory in rural areas of Somalia, and are fighting to overthrow the UN-backed government.
The militants are known for killing suspected informers, including those accused of spying for US and other foreign intelligence agencies.
Meanwhile in Kenya success has been reported after major special forces air and ground operation has been ongoing since November 20, when Romano, a volunteer for the NGO African Milele Onlus, was kidnapped in an armed attack in the coastal town of Kilifi.
Kenyan police have arrested one of the three main suspects wanted in relation to the kidnapping of Italian aid worker Silvia Costanza Romano.
Ibrahim Adan Omar, who had a KES1 million ($13,500) bounty on his head, was nabbed at Bangali in Tana River County on Sunday.
“It’s true we have arrested one suspect, but I may not disclose other details since it could jeopardize the investigations,”Coast regional Administration Police Commander James Akoru said.
An AK-47 rifle, two magazines and 100 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspect.
Omar is reportedly in custody and assisting police in their investigation.
Two other suspects Yusuf Kuno Adan and Said Adan Abdi – are wanted in relation to the kidnapping are still on the run.
The suspects are believed to be planning to cross over into Somalia with Romano.
A security operation comprising the Kenya Police, AP, GSU, Kenya Defence Forces, KWS, and special forces are in Tana River and Lamu searching for the suspects.
