Central Bank to educate the public on the features of new currency

The Central Bank of Kenya though the CBK governor Patrick Njoroge has revealed their plan to roll out an awareness campaign to educate the public on the features on new currency.

This comes after the launch of new currency today which was presided over by the Head of State President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The President officiated the launch of the new generation currency at the CBK in line with the 2010 constitution.

According to the Central Bank of Kenya Act, it is illegal to have the portrait of an individual on notes and coins that are used as Kenyan currency.

The Act states that: “Notes and coins issued by the Central Bank of Kenya may bear images that depict or symbolise Kenya or an aspect of Kenya but shall not bear the portrait of any individual.”

The Act that became law with the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution was scheduled to be enacted in September of 2015.

According to the CBK, the current currency will be withdrawn in phases, even as the new currency is introduced.

The new generation coins continues the tradition of depicting an aspect that best describes our country. President Kenyatta has termed this as another milestone in the Kenyan history.

According to the Central Bank of Kenya governor; Patrick Njoroge , the significance of the new coins will serve as a means of passing knowledge conserving culture and promoting global uniqueness.

Njoroge said that the CBK, by engraving selected images on the coinage will create awareness of our country and its characteristics will be revitalized giving physical expression to a newly reborn and prosperous Kenya.

With the awareness campaign ahead after the launch, Kenyans will be ready to embrace the new coinage and appreciate the efforts by the government to revolutionize the economic sector for the good of the nation.
