New Chelsea rule means one star will not be offered new contract

Chelsea’s Brazilian defender David Luiz is unlikely to be offered a new contract because it would mean the club would have to change their transfer policy regarding players over the age of 30.

It’s a strategy which may be challenged when Eden Hazard (currently 28) comes out of contract – especially if he continues to interest Real Madrid.

Chelsea are reluctant to offer one-year contract extensions to players in their 30s but they are one of several clubs under investigation by FIFA over possible violations of rules on the signing of foreign players under the age of 18.

If they are found guilty, they will be subject to a lengthy transfer embargo so they may have to think twice about some of the players who are currently approaching the age of 30 or are over 30. The Blues recently offered new deals to Marcos Alonso, N’Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Luiz isn’t the only player who Chelsea’s policy is going to affect. Both Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill are in the final months of their contract and could be facing similar conversations.

There was plenty of praise for Luiz after his performance which helped Chelsea shut out Manchester City on Saturday. But the player has been vocal in insisting he wants more a new contract of more than 12 months. Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has also stated he wants the player to stay on.

Luiz could start talking to foreign clubs about a potential January move now so Chelsea may have to move quickly
