Chelsea boss reveals why he is reluctant to swap Marcos Alonso with Emerson Palmieri

Maurizio Sarri admits that Marcos Alonso is struggling for form but the Chelsea boss revealed why he is still reluctant to replace him with Emerson Palmieri at left-back.

The 27-year-old has started every Premier League match so far this season, while also getting the nod in the opening Europa League game of the season.

Meanwhile, Emerson has made just appearances in the cup competitions and has hardly even made the bench throughout the whole campaign when it comes to the league.

Alonso signed a new deal in October that would keep him at the club until 2023, however the Spaniard’s performances have massively dropped off and he put in two poor showings against Fulham and Wolves.

While Alonso has looked tired at times, Sarri insists that is not the case, but his work in attacking and defending free-kicks is making the Italian reluctant to switch him for the Italy international.

“In the last period, he didn’t play a lot. He wasn’t in the national team in the last international break. I don’t know… the minutage. It’s not very high for him.

“He played in all 14 matches in the Premier League, but he didn’t play in the Europa League or the League Cup. In the national team, he played only one match.

“So he played not very well against Fulham, of course. He played better in the first half in the last match, of course, and then had problems in the second half. I need to understand because, for me, he is not tired. I want to see the last training and then I will decide.

“Of course. Emerson is a good option. I have to consider, also, some details. For example, without Alonso, we could have problems at set-pieces. So I have to consider everything.”At the moment we have no serious injuries,” Sarri added. “I think that every player will be able to play. But, of course, I have to see the last training [session].”
