What happens when those appointed to protect and ensure the safety in the country turn against the very citizens they are meant to protect? Where are we headed if the men in blue are feared more than criminals armed with guns?

Robert Otieno, a former police officer in Homa Bay was on today arraigned in court and charged with the murder of a 37-year-old man, George Odhiambo. The Police officer who was previously attached to Pangani Police Station was charged with killing George at Wiga Village, Kalanya Kanyango Location within Homa Bay Town on November 20, 2018.

According to Valary Ongeti, the Prosecutor in the case, the former police officer was armed with a pistol and knife on the night George was killed.

“The officer stabbed the deceased on the neck with the knife he had in his pocket killing him on the spot,” said the prosecutor.

Appearing before High Court Judge Joseph Karanja, the suspect denied committing the offence and requested to be released on bail pending hearing of the case. However, the court declined his request after the prosecution argued that he is a dangerous man and could be harmed or killed by villagers who are baying for his blood.

The suspect, Mr. Otieno will now have to spend his 2018 Christmas with other inmates after the court ordered that he be remanded at Homa Bay GK prison until January 21 next year when the court will decide on his bond.
