Jurgen Klopp responded in a spiky manner to questions about his Liverpool midfield sometimes being “overrun”.

Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner and Jordan Henderson struggled to contain Marco Verratti in the first half in their 2-1 loss to PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday.

And, with Fabinho and Naby Keita still trying to bed into life at Anfield, Klopp was asked about his midfield issues ahead of the Merseyside derby against Everton – which Henderson will miss through suspension.

“Jordan is not available,” Klopp replied with a spikier than normal response. “What should I do? Ask the FA? I really do not understand a lot of your questions today. Yes, my players are ready but they have to prove it on Sunday.

“We conceded five [league] goals and you say our midfield is overrun? I don’t see that. No, I don’t see any problems in midfield.”

On their loss to PSG, Klopp added: “We weren’t happy with what we did, we weren’t happy with what they did. After the game on Wed night we would have wanted to play again straight away, preferably against them.”

On whether past results matter in a derby, Klopp continued: “I couldn’t even tell you how we got on against Everton at home last season, it’s not important.

“We just have to make sure we are ready for this one and create an atmosphere which is exceptional to help the team. The boys deserve it 100%.”
