If you use public transport, then brace yourself for delays and disruptions. The county government of Nairobi  is planning to rid the central business district off traffic , but at a cost. The Nairobi county government has revived its March plans to sanction a proposal meant to ban matatus from CBD.

PSV will no longer be allowed access to the Nairobi Central Business District beginning Monday, December 3, the county government has announced.

City Hall has published a notice  in the local dailies announcing that 11 termini had been designated for matatus to pick and drop off passengers.

“The operators are required to take note that the above changes take effect as from December 3, 2018 and all previous gazette notices/letter allocating any other place as picking and dropping areas within CBD are hereby revoked and become null and void as from December 3, 2018,” reads the notice signed by acting County Secretary Pauline Kahiga.

All matatus that have been accessing the city centre through Thika Road, Waiyaki Way, Uhuru Highway, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, Ruiru and Kiambu Road will pick and drop passengers at Fig Tree in Ngara.

PSVs from Jogoo Road will stop at Muthurwa while those from Ngong Road will park at Railways Terminus. Matatus from Mombasa Road and Lang’ata Road will pick and drop off passengers at Hakati Terminus.

All upcountry vehicles accessing Nairobi via Waiyaki Way will drop off passengers at Park Road Terminus together with those that go past Kenol on Nyeri/Meru-Nairobi Road.

All vehicles that go past Ruiru but branch off before or at Kenol Town on Nyeri/Meru-Nairobi Road will stop at Desai Service Road Terminus.

Matatus using Juja Road, Ring Road Ngara and Park Road will operate from Ngara Road Terminus.

The sanitization operation wants to wipe away criminal gangs, rogue matatus, politicians and corrupt traffic cops. In September, a matatu rammed into a patrol car damaging it during chaos in Nairobi Central Business District.
Meanwhile, matatu operators have faulted the county government for the planned CBD ban, saying the new termini cannot hold the high number of vehicles expected to park at those locations.
