The teenage pregnancy menace in Kenya has sent the country in a frenzy as leaders from across all sectors try to find solutions to curb the societal vice that has been described as a ‘national crisis’ by Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed.

Today, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Board Chairman, Professor George Magoha has said that he wants all pornography sites in the country blocked. He called on the relevant authorities to take action saying that other countries like China have managed to do so.

According to Mr. Magoha, pornography websites are to blame for the rising cases of teenage pregnancies reported during the national exams.

“Getting pregnant when you are not ready is primitive and a sign of moral decadence and negligence from parents,” Magoha said.

“If within three days we saw hundreds of them giving birth, it means it has been going on throughout the year and it’s what we call in medicine a pandemic,” he added.

Prof. Magoha further expressed his disappointment in the country’s leadership which he accused of not educating the girl child on family planning. He called for the introduction of sex education in schools adding that such lessons are important and any one who thinks that sex education is unnecessary is outdated.

The KNEC boss called out leaders who allegedly cheered on people to ‘multiply and fill the earth’.

Touching on the allegations of leaked exam papers, Magoha denied the claims saying that a few issues of malpractice were expected but nothing out of the ordinary. He added that the students remained calm during the examination period despite claims that the police officers manning the exam centers were scaring them.

“For those few people who are making noise about policemen, in my humble view, may as well have been part of the people who have been giving us sleepless nights,” Magoha said.
