Despite numerous government efforts to combat spread of HIV/Aids in Kenya especially among the youth, majority of new infections still remain the young generation.

According to the latest report by the National Aids Control Council (NACC), girls aged between 15 and 24 years record highest number of new HIV infections in Kenya, translating to one third.

It further shows 52,767 new infections including 7,978 children is reported annually hence about 14,929 girls aged between 15 and 24 contracted HIV in 2017 alone. In terms of prevalence rate in counties, Nairobi has the highest new infections among young women aged 15 and 24 years with 2,587.

Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisumu, and Migori counties follow with 1,852, 1,641,1,630 and 1,143 respectively. Head of Monitoring and Evaluation at NACC Joshua Gitonga attributed the spread to lack of comprehensive prevention methods and increased cases where old men date young girls.

“Trans-generational sex that happens when girls go for older partners is something that cannot be overlooked. This target group lacks comprehensive knowledge of HIV and do not have access to prevention methods because the majority rely on guardians for all their health issues,” he said.
