Gareth Southgate was quick to heap praise on Harry Kane in the aftermath of England’s late 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Croatia at Wembley on Sunday by claiming the Tottenham Hotspur striker was the “best goalscorer in the world” after he notched the winner for the Three Lions.
However, while the English fans went to work on Monday humming the Baddiel & Skinner classic ‘It’s Coming Home’ and agreeing with Southgate’s sensational claim, there was an emerging talent ready to push his name into the ring in regards of the world’s best goalscorer on Monday night and the man in question is Germany’s hotshot Timo Werner.
A man that failed to net a single goal at the World Cup in a beleaguered Germany side, Werner has recaptured his form in front of goal for both Germany and his current club RB Leipzig, and he showed last night with a delightful long-range strike in Germany’s 2-2 draw with Holland that he is readily turning into one of the finest strikers in the world.
When the debate emerges for that premier striker in the world not only will Kane’s name come to the surface, but the usual of suspects of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will also come to the fore, while Premier League fans will be quick to shove Sergio Aguero and Mo Salah’s name into the picture in a fascinating debate.
However, Werner’s emergence this season surely must put him towards the top of the pile – if not at the top of it – as last night’s wondrous strike showed that he is not only a man that can poke goals home from close range, but he has the skill and ability to find the back of the net from relatively hopeless positions and at 22-years old he is destined for the very top.
Six goals already in the Bundesliga this season for Leipzig, Werner has also bagged a brace of goals in the DFB-Pokal to enhance his fine start to the season and become arguably one of the hottest properties in world football and the former Stuttgart youth star must be a target for all the leading clubs.
While the aforementioned Messi and Ronaldo are coming to the final stages of their careers there has to be a new attacking star that takes over the reins from that brace of superstars and if Werner can continue to blossom for both club and country then he could be the next superstar striker, if he’s not topping that pile already!
