It’s going to be another long week for Migori County Governor Okoth Obado after police have today sought fifteen days to detain Migori governor Okoth Obado who is facing the charge of possessing guns illegally.

“We are asking for 15 days to allow the officers (including ballistics) to travel to his rural home to thoroughly investigate. We will need time to also find out if the firearms were used in any crimes which might lead to other charges,” said State Prosecutor, Catherine Mwaniki.

However, Obado through his lawyers said that none of the pending investigations against him require his detention terming the application as punishment by public humiliation and embarrassment.

According to Ms. Mwaniki, Obado did not give any satisfactory reasons as to why he was in possession of the the firearms and ammunition recovered by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission in his Nairobi and Migori homes.

There was tight security in Kibera as Governor Obado was ushered into the courtroom accompanied by his lawyer Cliff Ombeta. The governor was arraigned at the Kibera law court after he was arrested yesterday and interrogated at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

The DCI said that the guns would be subjected to ballistic examination and verification to establish whether they were used in any crime and whether the governor was a licensed gun owner.

Apart for being charged with the possession of firearms, Obado is also facing accusations of embezzlement of Migori County funds. The EACC conducted a five-hour long search across the governors homes in Migori and Nairobi and obtained documents that could help in the ongoing investigation on Obado’s hand in the misappropriation of over Ksh. 2 billion county funds.

According to the EACC, they received credible information that a few persons well known to be proxies of the governor, registered several companies for the purpose of fraudulent acquisition of public funds through fictitious contracts.

Governor Obado is also currently facing murder charges of slain Rongo University student, the Late Sharon Otieno and her unborn child. Obado was recently released on a Ksh. 5 million bail on October 25 after more than a one month long stay in custody at Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi.

Surely just how much tragedy can one person handle? Is the spirit of the late Sharon Otieno and her unborn baby tormenting Obado?
