When they said Bhangi ni mbaya, they didn’t lie as it has put one Dennis Mbae Mutegi in big trouble. A former Embu County Assembly aspirant was on Thursday arraigned in court and charged with trafficking cannabis sativa (bhang) worth Ksh. 260,000.

Dennis Mbae Mutegi who was contesting the Kirimari ward representative seat on a Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket denied the offence before the Embu Law Courts Resident Magistrate, Jean Ndengeri.

Mr. Mutegi was charged on November 14, 2018 at Dallas Estate in Embu County where he was found trafficking cannabis sativa weighing 13 kilograms with a street value of Ksh. 260,000 in contravention of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Control Act.

The ex-politician was arrested after police officers who had trailed him for three months cornered him at his house in Dallas estate. While searching his Probox vehicle, the drugs were recovered.

He was released on a Ksh.300,000 bond with two sureties of a similar amount.

The case was set for mention on November 29 and hearing on December 13, 2018.

Additionally, the prosecution was also ordered to supply him with all the documentary evidence that will be used in the case.

However, Mr. Mbae seems to be a habitual drug trafficker. In 2014, a warrant of arrest was issued for Denni Mbae over the sale of illicit brew ‘Gathuvuria’ that killed 33 people in Shauri Yako slums Embu.

Mbae appeared in court accompanied by lawyer Mungai Kivuti but denied the charges and pleaded to be released on bond. Embu Resident Judge Hedwig Ong’udi granted the Mbae’s bail application and released him on a Ksh. 150,000 bond and a surety of a similar amount.

Funny enough, like in his recent case, Mr. Mbae requested for copies of prosecution witnesses’ statements and other documents the prosecution will use in the case.

It’s sad that young lives are being destroyed by drugs yet the traffickers are walking around scot free. Mbae was accused of illicit brew that killed over thirty people but the court has not taken any action against him. All eyes are now on the Embu court to take action against the politician.
