EACC Raids Governor Obado’s homes In Ksh 2bn Graft Probe Case

Police and detectives from anti-graft agency on Tuesday raided the homes of Governor Okoth Obado in Migori and Nairobi. The early morning raid by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was in search of documents and material to aid in an ongoing probe on corruption allegations against him.

Obado is also facing murder charges and was released on Sh5 million bail on October 25 after more than one month stay in custody at Industrial Area Remand Prison in Nairobi. The Governor is accused of murdering of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on Tuesday morning raided Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s Nairobi and Migori homes.

According to reports, the sleuths were reportedly searching for documents and material to aid in investigations in a corruption case against him.

 

The embattled governor is accused by the anti-graft body of confiscating Ksh 2 billion from the county coffers through companies registered by his relatives.

In documents filed in court by EACC, the commission reportedly received credible information regarding the corruption case.

“A few persons well known to be proxies of the governor, registered several companies for the purpose of fraudulent acquisition of public funds through fictitious contracts,” the statement read.

EACC has narrowed down to 23 companies believed to be used by Obado to win several tenders between 2013 and 2017, tracing Ksh 2.3 billion to the suspected conduits.

Besides, the detectives unearthed 32 companies, 77 pieces of land and other assets linked to the Governor and his associates.

EACC has been investigating the alleged procurement irregularities at Migori County since September 2017.

According to the detectives, the procurement scam enabled Obado to build a home worth Ksh 100 million in Uriri, Migori County.

Obado also reportedly sent at least Ksh 39 million to his children in Australia, Hong Kong and China where they’re studying.

In September 2018, EACC obtained court orders to freeze bank accounts of Governor Obado and his brothers; Jared Peter Odoyo Oluoch Kwaga, Ernest Omondi Owino and Joram Opala Otieno.

The siblings were all accused of being part of an intricate web that looted funds from the Migori County Government.
