Discoloured maize found in Kisumu

If there’s one Cabinet Secretary who has had it rough this past few months, it’s got to be CS Mwangi Kiunjuri as his ministry has been facing problems one after the other. According to Kiunjuri, 60% of maize stored in the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Kisumu is discoloured.

After an inspection conducted by an inter-ministerial team, CS Kiunjuri said they were yet to confirm whether or not the 300,000 bags of maize were fit for human consumption.

The Kisumu depot which has a capacity of 900,000 bags of maize and received 600,000 bags last year. Kiunjuri also stated that an inter-ministerial team would visit all the depots in the country to ensure the safety of maize in the stores. He further added that the ministry would give a comprehensive report of the nationwide inspection of the NCPB stores on Friday.

Kiunjuri said that the CS said that if the maize is found to be bad, it will either be destroyed or used as animal feeds.

While addressing the press in Kisumu, CS  Kiunjuri also defended the composition of the 15-member sugar task force tasked with finding solutions for the revival of the sugar industry. He asked farmers and stakeholders who had lamented over the composition of the task force not to politicize the issue saying that he had already received five petitions.

Kiunjuri praised the qualifications of the members of the task force, adding that they should be accorded a favourable environment to deliver.

“How big can a taskforce be? Already we are 16, I have 5 petitions… how many petitions can I receive? Is it about representation or the output? Have you looked at the CVs of the people we have picked for the task force? So qualified people,” said Kiunjuri.

“We have looked at all the stakeholders and they are represented, but if you want to politicize this issue, it will never come to an end. Allow the taskforce to work, this industry is suffering, we must work in harmony and put the interests of our people first,” he added.

The task force is co-chaired by CS Kiunjuri and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya. Other members include sugar belt region Governors Okoth Obado (Migori) and Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu) representing the Council of Governors, a representative of the public millers, two representatives from private millers among others.
