Who will be the next Managing Director for the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA)? Well, only time will tell…

Although National Construction Authority Managing Director, Daniel Manduku holds the position in an acting capacity, the position of MD for KPA has been vacant since June this year when Catherine Mturi-Wairi sent in her resignation in of June 2018.

“I hereby wish to inform you of my decision to voluntarily vacate from the office of Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority with immediate effect, to enable me pursue other personal interests,” said Mrs. Catherine in a letter addressed to the Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has now begun the search for the next Managing Director to replace Catherine Mturi-Wairi. Through the consulting firm Deloitte, the authority says the position will be on contractual terms for a period of three years renewable.

Former KPA MD, Catherine Mturi-Wairi was sent her on compulsory leave over incompetence and theft of containers but opted to resign a few days later.

Mrs. Wairi had also been accused of inefficiency and cargo clearance delays at the port by the Kenya Ports Authority board. Sources further say the decision was also linked to failure by the port management to curb on illicit imports, counterfeits and contraband.

Mrs. Mturi-Wairi was appointed on July 12, 2016 having served in an acting capacity for five months. In her resignation letter, she thanked the President for giving her the opportunity to serve as the MD at the Kenya Ports Authority and expressed her availability and willingness to serve the country in any other capacity.
