Here is the EPL star who has never lost a match

Manchester City have conceded just three goals in their 10 matches this season with John Stones and Aymeric Laporte forming a brilliant partnership. Manchester City went back to the top of the Premier League on goal difference after beating Tottenham 1-0 at Wembley and the defensive duo in the league’s best defence held firm.

While the pair didn’t have to do much defensively, that didn’t stop Laporte setting a new Premier League record. That’s because the Frenchman has now gone more games without losing than anyone in history – and he extended that at Wembley. Laporte has played 19 Premier League matches, winning 17 and losing zero.

The Frenchman currently tops an unheralded list of players who have never been on a losing side in England’s elite division. Manchester City teammate Benjamin Mendy is currently second on the list with 14 matches unbeaten, while retired Simon Davies finished his career having been unbeaten after 11 games. p1cr2bdij37vl155f5gu14n11pqsd.jpg

Eyebrows were raised when Guardiola broke City’s transfer record to bring in this relatively unknown centre-back from Athletic Bilbao in January, a youngster who did not register particularly high on any defensive stat in La Liga, and one who, initially, did not look anything special. However, slowly but surely Guardiola has eased Laporte in, helping him forge an almost telepathic bond with John Stones, and the results are simply astounding.

City remain unbeaten in the Premier League when Laporte has featured (P19 W17 D2 L0) – meaning the Spaniard has played more Premier League games without losing than any other player in the history of the competition. Tackles do not come into it. Laporte is not there to win tackles, that’s what Fernandinho is for. Laporte’s ability to read the game allows him to only intervene when he needs to, and heads corners clear for fun.

It was the same with Gerard Pique when he was at Barcelona under Guardiola. He was that last man, who passed the ball out from the back when required, but had the ability to read the ball and head corner after corner away from danger. No City player made more clearances at Wembley than Laporte.

“If I have to make a tackle then I have already made a mistake,” Paolo Maldini once said, and such a sentiment rings true with Stones, and especially Laporte at the heart of the City defence.

Following an NFL game being played on the turf 24 hours earlier, both sides had to deal with a less than perfect pitch. But it didn’t take long for Pep Guardiola’s side to seize control. Raheem Sterling embarrassed England teammate Kieran Trippier before cutting the ball back perfectly to Riyad Mahrez to stroke home. City continued to dominate for the remaining 84 minutes but couldn’t add to Mahrez’s strike, despite having 19 attempts.
