Kenya Nurse’s Union Secretary General arrested

 

The Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary General Seth Panyako has been arrested for inciting nurses at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to participate in a protest.

Several protesting nurses were also arrested and held in custody at the KNH police post.

The nurses at the referral hospital were protesting against the management’s infringement of their right to join a union.

KNH  chief security Manase Mukhwana reported the protest to the police stating that” Panyako is an outsider and has no permit to incite nurses to strike.”

The nurses at the referral hospital said the go-slow followed the “management’s infringement of their right to join a union.”

The health workers further raised security concerns citing.

Recently the nurses demanded  enhancement of security after their colleague  was attacked by the deceased relatives respect from patients and their relatives.

The hospital management also condemned the assault which has led to the arrest of one suspect.

“You would think it was a wrestling match. The attacker beat her with a blunt object before jumping on her, covering her mouth and strangling her,” Kenya National Union of Nurses vice chairman Moses Chirchir said .

Sexual assault

Several female nurses at the hospital have complained about harassment by male patients in the orthopedic wing.

A nurse, who spoke to the Nation in confidence for fear of being victimized, said “They tell me to my face that they want to sleep with me.”

The nurses have resorted to wearing trousers to work, not as a preference but for protection. Their colleagues in other wards wear tunics.

Citing the previous attack on a nurse by the deceased relatives, one of the striking nurses said,”one of us was hurt but the management has not taken any action or given any information regarding the patient who assaulted the nurse.”
