KCSE candidate dies on road accident

A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate dies following a road accident at Kamutanga area along Machakos Kangundo road.

The night accident involved a motorbike which is said to have been carrying four people who were coming from watching a football match three people including thee KCSE candidate died on the spot.

Their bodies have been transferred to Machakos Level Five hospital mortuary.

Two others who sustained injuries were rushed to the Machakos Level Five hospital for treatment.

Witnesses say the motorbike was speeding and hit a bump before losing control and crashing.

Deaths of KCSE candidates have risen days before the beginning of  exams this year’s exams over the weekend other candidate collapsed and died during the pre-exam bash.

A candidate at Gaichanjiru Boys High School died on Saturday night, barely four days before start of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

The candidate from  Gaichanjiru  Boys High School  is said to have collapsed while dancing with his colleagues in the school dining halls as part of the entertainment programme.

The school Principal Mr James Mbothu said the student had not shown signs of sickness and his friends reported he was jovial the whole day.

“The boy was with others in the dining hall for their entertainment and he went down and collapsed. Efforts by his colleagues and school nurse to resuscitate him failed. At Gaichanjiru Mission Hospital the medics pronounced him dead on arrival and said they suspected he died as a result of cardiac arrest,” he said.

Talking to The Standard, the principal said the body had been moved to Bishop Okoye Mortuary in Thika to await a postmortem. The parents, he said, had been notified of the incident.

 

Security team visited the school as part of the investigation as other candidates mourned death of their colleague.

Another candidate in Elgeyo Marakwet died after allegedly consuming methanol.

Reports indicate that the deadly chemical may have been stolen from their laboratory in Barsumbat Secondary School.

Another student is said to have lost his sight after also consuming the substance.

Sub County Director of Education in the region Evans Onyancha confirmed the incident and revealed that the second victim was a Form Three student.

He however dismissed claims that the students were affected after drinking methanol.

In Trans-Nzoia County a Kenya Certificate Secondary Examinations candidate also lost his life after allegedly consuming ethanol (C ₂H ₅OH).
