The head of state is celebrating his birthday today as he turns 57. Many Kenyans on social media have sent him birthday wishes as old friends celebrated him for various reasons with some revealing the other side of Uhuru that most people didn’t know existed.
Happy birthday to @UKenyatta, an able leader. Your astute stewardship and focus to ensure good for man and country has won you recognition. God’s wisdom as you unite Kenya and build a formidable legacy. My friend, confidant and boss many happy returns of the day!

Reminiscing on days with the current president, 74-year-old Mugo Karuga has chosen to celebrate the kindness and humility he saw in Uhuru when he was growing up in front of his eyes. Mugo was the designated driver of one of the vehicles assigned to Kenya’s first President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and often drove Uhuru to school.
He recalls vividly a day Kenyatta’s son impressed him during a presentation to the then president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta at Gatundu.“As the children started entertaining the President, I saw Uhuru rush to the dais and whispered something to his father.
“The boy immediately removed his shoes and joined the choir,’’ stated Karuga.
The former driver revealed that after Uhuru’s act, he was instructed by the senior Kenyatta to take the children to a Bata shop and buy each of them a new pair of shoes.
“Had Uhuru not requested his father to remove his shoes and join the children in the choir, perhaps Mzee would not have seen the need to have the children who entertained him get shoes,’’ added the former driver, who has since retired and has not met the current President since the demise of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
He also reveals how Uhuru ensured he got decent meals from the family kitchen.”My young friend would never let me go hungry while manning the gate, he would always ensure that the cooks served me from the family kitchen,’’ he recalled.
“If there is something I miss, it is those delicious meals the First Family used to be served.
Do you believe politics changed Uhuru Kenyatta or he is still the same kind and charming boy?
