The planned upgrade of the Nairobi Central Railway Station and its surroundings has inched closer to execution after the Transport ministry called for public input on the project.
The upgrade is aimed at among other things improving transport linkage to the South of Nairobi.
The project – one of the priorities identified in the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Plan as a strategy for the expansion of the city centre – is also aimed at developing an iconic multi-modal urban development dubbed the Nairobi Railway City.
The ministry has, therefore, sought the public’s views in preparation for the project. “This is pursuant to articles on public participation in the Constitution, the Physical Planning Act, the County Governments Act and relevant provisions in Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act as well as the National Strategic Environmental Assessment guidelines,” read the ministry’s notice published in local dailies yesterday.
The ministry praised the participatory approach that has been adopted in preparation for the project, saying it has led to the development of options that have informed the preparation of the master plan for multi-modal transportation, urban and socio-economic development and environmental management.
The area, which is about 368 acres of prime land, includes the Nairobi Central Railway Station, marshalling yard, Kenya Railways Pension Scheme Land (Muthurwa and Landimawe), locomotive and wagons workshop and extends to include parts of Industrial Area.
The county-level workshop will be held by the ministry in partnership with Kenya Railways and the Nairobi City County government on October 24, 2018 from 8am at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.
