BLOW FOR CHRIS WAMALWA AS MPs FAIL TO SUPPORT HIM

The joke is now on Kiminini MP, Chris Wamalwa after Members of Parliament fail to raise the required numbers to have the election date changed from August to December.

The Bill proposed by Mr. Wamalwa has suggested that the election date be moved from the second Tuesday of August to the third Monday of December in every election year, on grounds that the current election date of August affects the national school calendar.

The Members of Parliament were this afternoon expected to vote on the matter which has now flopped after only 187 MPs turned up in the August House which is less than the 2/3 majority.

The Kiminini MP had earlier stated that he was confident that the MPs would support him but as it turns out, they just might have played him.

“I have no doubt that this proposal will pass because I have the support of the members.”

If the MPs had approved the bill, taxpayers would have to fund an extra 1.2billion to keep the lawmakers in office for the additional four months.

In 2015, a similar push was made by Ugenya MP, David Ochieng, where he cited that August date is too crowded with activities around the school calendar and the high tourist season which does not allow Kenyans to effectively exercise their democratic right. He had cited the school calendar and the high tourist season during the period.

However, just like Wamalwa’s proposal, the bill failed as it did not garner the constitutionally required two-thirds majority.
