IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has blamed sacked CEO Ezra Chiloba for opposing reforms at the commission.

Chebukati on Monday said Chiloba had on various occasions opposed an internal audit to ascertain the cost of the 2017 general election.

He said he has written to the DPP and the EACC to investigate the irregularities raised. Chiloba was fired on Friday over alleged procurement irregularities during the 2017 general elections.

“It is now up to the DPP and the DCI to investigate and substantiate the claims. For my part, I am of the view that all those who are involved in any misdeals must be held accountable. Be it any staff or myself, they must be brought to book. Such people do not deserve to be called Kenyans, in fact, they must rot in jail,” Chebukati added.

Mr Chiloba announced Friday evening in a tweet that his employment at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been terminated.

“I received the employment termination letter signed by the chairman about an hour ago. The letter claims that I had twice been invited to appear before the disciplinary committee of the commission, but failed to show up, hence the decision to terminate my employment,” Mr Chiloba said in a statement he posted on Twitter.

On Thursday, Mr Chiloba turned down an invitation to appear before the disciplinary committee to defend himself over audit queries.

Chebukati said he will not sit at the helm of the commission where taxpayers money is embezzled.

“This is why the CEO was fired and we want to reiterate that as a commission we are not asleep as many have been made to believe. We shall not be distructed. It is true we are not 100 per cent accurate but we shall not just sit as public funds are embezzled,” he said.

Chebukati said the commission has also embarked on structured reforms and restructuring of its staff to ensure integrity in all that they do.

He spoke at Wote Town in Makueni during the official launch of continuous voter registration exercise.

The commission hopes to increase the number of registered voters by 2022 from the current 19.6 million voters to 22 million.
