Revealed: Disturbing New details on Driver of ill-fated bus that killed 55

Disturbing details have emerged on the driver of the ill-fated bus that claimed 55 lives on Wednesday morning, along the Londiani-Muhoroni road in Kericho County.
In a report by Nation, the driver only identified as Lucas may have been fatigued or may have fallen asleep on the fateful morning, causing the accident.

The report said that the driver had driven the bus on Tuesday from Kisumu to Nairobi and arrived at 5 pm, before the return journey started at around 11pm.

The driver had no reliever to help him out in case he got tired as required by law, for long distance public service vehicles (PSV).

According to one of the survivors, the ill-fated bus was overloaded and some of the passengers sat on crates.

“The vehicle had hardly left the city when the driver was instructed to make a U-turn and go for more passengers being transferred from another bus,” read part of the story by Nation.

The survivor identified as Joseph Oponyo added that the bus was also over speeding and kept veering but their pleas were unheard by the driver.

This comes a day after the accident claimed 55 lives. Reports from police say that the owner of the bus Mr. Cleophas Shimanyula has so far been arrested, after the bus was found to have been operating illegally.

Only 17 bodies have been identified as the death toll in the Fort Ternan accident rose to 56.

Kericho County Police Commander James Mugera said out of the 56, 35 are men, 13 women and 8 children perished in the Wednesday morning accident on the Londiani-Muhoroni Highway in Kericho.

The Kericho government has appealed to volunteers to donate blood for the survivors.

In a statement, Kericho governor Paul Chepkwony said the survivors include one child, six women and nine men who are receiving treatment.

He said the county government will meet the cost of treatment for all the survivors.

The governor said the county and the Kenya Red Cross Society have established an information desk and call centre at the Kericho Referral Hospital.

“Those wishing to find out more information can contact 0715820219 or 0735680356 any time of the day and night for as long as the process of identification of bodies will take place,” the county boss said.

The Kericho County Referral Hospital has also set up a blood donation centre.
