Wayne Rooney weighs in on the Messi-Ronaldo debate

Rooney has made a staggering admission

Manchester United’s best ever goalscorer Wayne Rooney has come out and said that despite playing with Cristiano Ronaldo for five seasons at United, he believes that Lionel Messi is the best player of all time.

Despite praising Ronaldo’s obvious talent, Rooney, who now plays for Washington DC in the MLS, believes Messi is the better of the two players. Wazza spoke about the two times he faced the Argentine in the Champions League finals, in 2009 and 2011, where Messi got the better of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and lift the Champions League trophy:

“In both games if we had been against any other team but Barcelona you would have fancied us to win.

“In my eyes they are the best team ever and Messi is the best player ever. What he gets to do is incredible. Messi has just got a bit of everything.

“Ronaldo has gone from a winger to a striker and a goalscorer.

“Rather than taking players on all the time, he has gone more one or two touch, getting in the box and scoring goals.

“Messi a bit of everything – you see him scoring goals from playing probably a deep midfield role at times, and where I’m probably still walking on the pitch he’s scoring. So he is probably the best.”

Messi showed what a class act he is yet again last week as he ruined Spurs at Wembley in a thrilling 4-2 win. He and Ronaldo have won the last ten Ballon d’Or awards but that run could well end this year with Luka Modric the favourite to scoop the award.

Rooney once played with Cristiano Ronaldo while at Manchester United. Together, they won the UEFA Champions League in 2008 beating Chelsea in the final in Moscow despite Ronaldo’s penalty miss.
