DPP Haji bans Tycoon from UK travel

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji wants a Nairobi tycoon facing bribery case stopped from flying to the United Kingdom arguing he is running away from prosecution.

Mr Haji through Mombasa Senior Assistant DPP Mulele Ingonga said the tycoon is a flight risk and is likely not to return to Kenya to continue with the ongoing criminal proceedings against him.

“I am reasonably apprehensive that the applicant is likely to abscond court, this will further delay expeditious administration of criminal justice. From the foregoing, I believe that the accused person’s application should not be allowed,” he told Senior Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakweba.

Praful Kumar Premchand Saula who is out on a Sh500,000 bond on Thursday applied for leave to fly to the UK for a month.

Mr Kumar, who is charged with attempting to bribe Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, said he needs to fly to UK to attend to his daughter’s medical needs.

Mr Nyakweba had directed the suspect not to leave the court’s jurisdiction without the court’s leave.

The tycoon, arrested in Kilifi on August 20, has denied offering a Sh5 million bribe to the governor to approve and continue building his Grand Monar Hotel in Gigiri.

The magistrate will deliver a ruling on the application on October 16.
