Embezzlement of county funds in baringo and Bungoma

Baringo County used Sh20,000 to purchase a wooden meat chopping board, a new report has revealed.

According to the report by the county assembly’s Assembly Public Accounts and Investment Committee, the supplier of the chopping board was immediately paid upon delivery, contrary to Integrated Financial Management System (IFMIS procurement procedure.

“How can a piece of wood which is not more than Sh2,000 sell at Sh20,000? This is pure wastage of public resources and those responsible for the purchase should be surcharged the amount in excess of the market price at the time,” nominated MCA Saphina Chelagat said.

The inflated item was supplied by Brandhouse Solutions.

It was also revealed that the figure for repainting a restaurant for MCAs was exaggerated from Sh2 million to Sh17 million.

In 2018, former Bungoma County officials were sentenced for inflating the cost of wheelbarrows.

The seven were accused of acquiring 10 wheelbarrows for the county at Sh109,000 each.
