School Trip Turns Tragic as Four Students Drown in Athi River

What started as a Geography fieldwork class for Syokisinga mixed secondary school students turned tragic when four members of the team drowned in River Athi.

The tragic accident happened near Katangi, Machakos County on Wednesday.

One body has been retrieved and search for the others is ongoing.

“Three boys and one girl, all form one students from Syokisinga mixed secondary school have died in River Athi. They had gone for a Geography class (field work) with their teacher when they drowned while swimming,” Yatta sub-county education director Stephen Kitungu said.

KUPPET executive secretary, Machakos Musembi Katuku sent his message of condolence to the bereaved families.

“I have learned of the drowning of four form one students of Syokisinga secondary school with a lot of shock and disbelief. It is unfortunate that we have lost young and tender souls,” said Katuku.
