Chelsea defender David Luiz has hailed boss Maurizio Sarri as a “great coach” after the Italian coach’s impressive start to life in England. The Blues have begun their Premier League campaign with a 100 per cent record under the 59-year-old and are only behind leaders Liverpool on goal difference, with Sarri’s entertaining brand of football catching the eye.

Luiz has been of the beneficiaries since the former Napoli coach arrived, starting all four of Chelsea’s Premier League games this season having only played three in the entire 2017-18 campaign, and the Brazilian has praised his manager’s positive philosophy.

“First of all he’s a great person, great as a human,” Luiz told Chelsea Magazine. “I believe in this philosophy, and then after that he is a great coach. He wants to play with the ball, he wants to play with intensity, to work on the details and to give us all the information he can about the next game and the opponent.

“Every week he tries to make the best plan possible for the exact game and this is great because he is working in the best way for the team, for the collective.” Luiz returned for a second spell at Chelsea in 2016 from Paris Saint-Germain and ended the season with a Premier League winners’ medal. However, he fell out with former coach Antonio Conte and the 31-year-old was frozen out of the first-team before suffering a knee injury that kept him out until the end of the season.
