Western Legislators demand DCI kinoti’s action into fake Mumias Sugar

Western Legislators led by nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi have called on Director of Criminal investigations George Kinoti to take action into contraband sugar packed and branded as Mumias Sugar.

The lawmakers claim that Mumias Sugar Company has no sugar on its shelves yet there is sugar under its brand on the market.

Osotsi noted that the fake Mumias sugar has no specified production and expiry dates on the packets, displaying a sample to journalists during a press conference called by the western MPs and the parliamentary buildings.

‘The sugar being sold as Mumias sugar does not have the dates of production and expiry, yet Mumias sugar is lacking sugar on its shelves, ‘ said Osotsi.

The troubled Mumias sugar has in the recent past raised concerns by western region lawmakers who among other suggestions proposed sugar cane zoning as way of reviving sugar companies in the region.

This idea came as a result of competition among the sugar factories for the scarce  raw material, sugar cane.

They had earlier this year opposed sugar factories privatization which was being suggested by the national government as a way of reviving the sugar business in the region.

The legislators were strongly supported by area governors over the move to oppose privatization, among them  Bungoma county Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati who demanded that counties should be involved in the matter.
