LaLiga’s summer transfer window has closed yet clubs are continuing to maintain close tabs on players from other sides.

In particular, Catalonian giants Barcelona still have their eyes set on welcoming current PSG midfielder, Adrien Rabiot into their squad by next year at the latest.

The French International has been a priority signing for the club ever since the beginning of the summer after the player refused to renew his contract with PSG. The pressure from the French club to convince Rabiot to re-sign has been very strong, but the midfielder has remained firm. A clear sign he wants to leave the club next summer when his contract ends.

Barcelona are waiting, but must be careful. The clearest example came last season with Antoine Griezmann. The club was very clear they would come to an agreement because the deal was set to close and they felt so strongly about this they began addressing it in their media.

They began to take measures while waiting for the arrival of the Frenchman. They did not give the No. 7 jersey to Philippe Coutinho in January, evidently saving it for the Frenchman.

The surprise came just before the world Cup when Griezmann said no to Barcelona in the controversial documentary ‘La Decision’. A real bow for the club.

“It was a market opportunity, but one that does not come without drama,” explained Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre in El Mundo Deportivo, trying to get rid of the issue.

The club does not want the same thing to happen again with Rabiot.

Barcelona have maintained direct contacts and it seems as though the player is fully committing himself to become Barca’s next signing within a year.

The problem is that a lot can happen in a year and therefore the club ideally would like to have the move completed by January 1st, 2019 when Rabiot is legally free to begin negotiations with other clubs.

PSG will continue to pressure the player into staying at the club and other clubs like Juventus have also proclaimed their interest in the young talent.

Barcelona must make sure they have everything set straight regarding this deal as they cannot let what happened with Griezmann happen with Rabiot.
