Why Marcus Rashford needs to leave Man Utd

Ian Wright believes that Marcus Rashford has “Major decisions” to make over his future at Manchester United in the next year.

Rashford has started one of United’s four Premier League fixtures this season – getting sent off in their 2-0 victory over Burnley on Sunday – while he only started 17 in the whole of last term.

And former Arsenal striker Wright believes the Red Devils are playing him in the wrong position as he sees him as a striker rather than a wide man.

“I think that Rashford, especially when he burst onto the scene, we saw flashes of a striker that can go into the space and he can link up, and he can finish,” Wright said.

“Now, what’s happened to him since he’s been at United on the left or the right, wherever they play him, he’s played everywhere apart from up front learning his trade.

“He’s got pace, he’s got skill, he’s got finishing ability. He’s been playing in roles that have taken the edge off those sides of his game.

“Rashford’s got massive, massive, decisions to make in the next year, 18 months for me.

“He’s either got to leave Manchester United and play, and play in a position where he’s going to start to be that player we all thought he was going to be when he burst onto the scene, scoring goals left, right and centre every competition he has played in.

“Or he’s going to have to stay there, whether it’s Mourinho or whoever it is, and maybe playing on the left, maybe playing on the right, maybe playing up front.”

Marcus Rashford has apologised after being sent-off in the match on Sunday.

Rashford was dismissed 20 minutes from time for squaring up to Phil Bardsley after the Burnely defender appeared to kick out at him following a challenge.

The England international pushed his head into Bardsley’s, a reaction which referee Jon Moss deemed worthy of a red card. Afterwards, Mourinho admitted that his player had been a “naive boy”, and Rashford himself took to Twitter to apologise for his part in the incident.
