The cases have been listed for hearings, dismissals and or appropriate directions. They are before the High Court in Meru, Machakos, Kakamega, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nyeri, Embu, Bungoma and Milimani.

Early this year, Chief Justice David Maraga said cases that have delayed in courts for more than five years will be resolved by the end of the year.

He said people who fail to appear in courts for hearing when summoned will have their cases dismissed with costs.

When President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Maraga as the new CJ in 2016, he promised to reduce the backlog of cases.

Last year, Maraga said Judiciary had reduced cases to about 300 from an estimated 1 million that were reported in 2010.

He said the courts were, however, still grappling with a high number of new cases which stood at 533,350.

The CJ said 344,180 new cases were filed during the 2016/17 financial year.

He attributed the slow pace of resolution of the disputes to inefficiencies in the Judiciary and a large number of people seeking justice.

In addition she said, m”Of these, 63,214 cases are of five to 10 years. We have embarked on a clearance programme so that they are concluded by the end of next year.”
