Alexis Sanchez has given Manchester United a timely boost by returning to fitness. The Chilean forward missed Sunday’s dismal defeat at Brighton but has stepped up his battle to be fit for the vital clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford on Monday night.
United boss Jose Mourinho was in the dark about the 29-year-old injury in training last week and expected him to be a doubt for next week’s game.
After the loss at the Amex he said: “I don’t know really (the extent of Sanchez’s injury), let’s wait for the results of the studies.
“But I don’t think it’s a big thing. I think it will be one or two weeks maximum.”
With the pressure piling on Mourinho already, he needs his best players back and available for the must-win game against Spurs to lift the mood around Old Trafford.
Sanchez took to social media to give United fans an update on his progress.
The forward who has struggled to make an impact at United looked determined to be available for the game. Posting from the gym, he declared he was “training to be back soon”, adding “Come on United”.
Sanchez played the full 90 minutes in United’s season-opening 2-1 win over Leicester. In 19 appearances for United, he has scored a paltry three goals since his switch from Arsenal in January.
Mourinho will hope a return to form for Sanchez will reignite his team who looked devoid of ideas and energy against Chris Hughton’s Seagulls.
