Alisson Passes First Big Test

If last week’s debut in the Anfield romp against West Ham was a genteel introduction to the Premier League, this Selhurst Park assignment was billed as the Brazilian’s first taste of the real rough and tumble the Premier League can occasionally present.

Indeed, Alisson spent the days building up to the game being battered by a rugby tackle bag on the Melwood training field.

Such is the direct threat posed by Crystal Palace and Christian Benteke in particular, Jurgen Klopp all too aware of the strengths – and weaknesses – of the former Liverpool forward.

So lacking in threat were Palace in the first half, though, that Alisson had little to do except confidently claim one corner with the same minimum of fuss with which he sprayed the ball out from the back.

Well, that and watch in hope as Andros Townsend’s spectacular shot from range crashed against the crossbar.

It was a different matter after the break as Palace pressed, Alisson making a fine save to keep out Luka Milivojevic’s free-kick.

And the goalkeeper wasn’t to know an offside flag would be raised when parrying out Benteke’s header from a corner.

A further save from Wilfried Zaha underlined the point. It didn’t need the imminent departure of Loris Karius to Besiktas to confirm Liverpool now emphatically have a new number one.

Alisson wasn’t the only Liverpool player to receive an education in South London.

Ahead of him, Joe Gomez was being cajoled through the game by centre-back colleague Virgil van Dijk.

Given the pair had only last weekend against West Ham under their competitive belt, it would have been understandable had the duo demonstrated some signs of misunderstanding.

But here it was though they’d been together for years, Van Dijk dominating Benteke while Gomez’s pace and positioning proved beneficial against the thrust of the Palace counter-attack.

Never was that more evident than in the first half when the youngster chased down and neutralised a rampaging Zaha before the winger could truly take flight.

It says much about the confidence and authority Van Dijk has within the squad that he has swiftly assumed such leadership qualities.

That, though, is why Klopp was happy waiting to pay the big bucks for the Dutchman.

He has made better every single player he has performed alongside, a sure sign of true quality.

Gomez was the beneficiary again this time. And the longer the duo work together, the more difficult it will be for Joel Matip – on the bench here – and the stricken Dejan Loren to shoulder they way back into the heart of defence.

Rotation will come into play eventually, of course. Klopp will give each their opportunity.

For now, though, Gomez is the man in possession. And the reason why Ragnar Klavan is now in Italy.
