Anthony Martial is the only Manchester United player to be fined since Jose Mourinho became manager.

Mourinho was appointed in summer 2016 and has, by his own admission, fined just one player during his tenure.

Paul Pogba stated last week that he would be “fined” if he spoke his mind, in quotes that ‘bemused’ Mourinho.

The United manager insists the Frenchman was not punished however, and that only Martial has been fined in the last two years.

Pogba’s compatriot was reprimanded for failing to return to training in early August after leaving the club’s pre-season training camp in the United States to attend the birth of his child.

“You have to ask Paul,” Mourinho said, when about Pogba’s comments after the Leicester game.

“I’m here for two years and a couple of months and the only player that was fined was Anthony Martial, so is not easy to be fined here, so you have to ask him.

“I’m not going to ask him. I want him to work the way he is doing and play the way he is doing and that’s all that matters.”

Mourinho is blessed with a star-studded attack going into the new season and faces a dilemma, with Sanchez, Martial and Rashford all desperate to play in the same position.

And Brown has backed Sanchez to bounce back from his difficult start to life at United.

“I don’t think it’s not working,” he exclusively told Starsport.

“We all have faith in him, he was a fantastic player at Arsenal, he got bought in January.

The future of Anthony Martial dominated Manchester United’s summer transfer window but another Frenchman has stolen his limelight over the past week.

Paul Pogba’s post-match comments last Friday diverted attention away from Martial’s situation at Old Trafford but the 22-year-old’s desire to quit the club appears to remain. There has been no official word from the player’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, since he disclosed Martial’s intentions in a June interview.

“After thinking about all the factors and possibilities, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United,” Lamboley said two months ago. “There are lots of factors, and right now it’s too early to talk about them.

Manchester United want Anthony to extend his deal and do not want him to leave but we have not reached an agreement for several months.”

Martial riled Jose Mourinho by failing to return to United’s pre-season tour of the US following the birth of his second child and the forward was subsequently left out of the squad for the trip to Bayern Munich on August 5.
