Gor Mahia FC, AFC Leopards to fight for Sportpesa shield last eight slots

Two matches are set to wind up the round of 16 of the FKF SportPesa Shield knockout competition on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at the MISC Kasarani starting at 2 pm.

Defending champions AFC Leopards will face off with Division One side Mwatate United in the first match set to kick off at 2 pm before KPL sides Gor Mahia and Posta Rangers square it out at 4.15 pm.

Both matches are set to be aired Live on Y254 TV.

Kariobangi Sharks, Riverplate FC, Kenya Police, Ulinzi Stars, Tusker and Sofapaka, meanwhile, gained passage to the quarterfinals, set to be held between August 18, and August 19, 2018. This is following weekend wins over Modern Coast, Friendzone FC, Leysa FC, Vihiga United, Bungoma Super Stars and Western Stima respectively over the weekend.

Sofapaka stormed into the last eight of the 2018 SportPesa Shield Cup courtesy of a 4-1 dismissal of Western Stima in a last 16 clash played at the Narok Stadium on Sunday 22 July.

Goals from Elly Asieche, Brian Magonya, Stephen Waruru and an own goal from Junior Mukisa secured the win for John Baraza’s men with Kevin Okoth grabbing the consolation for Western Stima.

In the second game of a planned double header in Narok, Sofapaka got the ball rolling as early as the 12th minute when a free kick from the left from Asieche evaded everyone to bounce once and into the back of the net to give Batoto ba Mungu a lead they would not relinquish for the entire game.

It would take until the 40th minute for the hosts to extend their lead though it came fortuitously as Junior Mukisa bundled a Kepha Aswani cross from the right into his own net to close off a poor first half showing for the Kisumu based side that would continue into the second stanza.

Almost immediately after the restart, Western Stima players would give themselves a lifeline when substitute Kevin Okoth pulled one back with a strike from the edge of the area.

But the goal would do little to rattle Sofapaka who responded immediately with a third goal which was a thing of beauty as Brian Magonya unleashed a cracking shot from well over 25 yards out after he had been teed up by Kevin Kimani.

The final nail in the coffin would be pounded in by Stephen Waruru who tapped in from close range a Aswani cross to keep Sofapaka’s quest for a repeat of their 2013 Shield Cup triumph alive.

Ulinzi Stars came from a goal down to advance to the quarterfinals of the Sportpesa Shield courtesy of a 2-1 win over Vihiga United at Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday 22 July.

The second meeting in as many weeks between the two sides was characterized by a slow start in the opening exchanges as it developed into a midfield scram with few and wide chances.

Sparked to life

It however sparked to life towards the final stages of the first half, as against the run of play as the dominant side, Ulinzi Stars was caught napping after an attack and a long, lofted ball from the midfield was not well watched by the Ulinzi Stars defence and also caught Timothy Odhiambo spoilt between going out or staying put and his indecision was picked by Dennis Kalama, who flicked the ball to his far post for the opener in the 37th minute.

That did not last too long, however, at the restart, Ulinzi new boy Harun Mwale lifted in a perfect cross to pick out Elvis Nandwa’srun and the forward rose well to power home a thumping header that restored parity two minutes later.

In a replica of the equalizer, Oscar Wamalwa would rise highest to power home a header from Michael Otieno’s cross in the 83rd minute for the winner.

Ulinzi setback

The match however did not end too well for Ulinzi as skipper of the day Hassan Mohamed had to be withdrawn midway through the second half heavily bloodied and with a bandage in the head after coming out worse in a collision with Dennis Wafula.

Towards the end of the match Masita Masuta got to the end of a fine run with a fine shot that flashed across the face of goal before hitting the upright.

Vihiga’s Wafula posed the biggest threat for the hosts as they rallied for a late goal, but that didn’t come to be as Ulinzi held on, though with a changed system that forced Mbongi to shift to defence after Mohamed’s withdrawal.
