Juventus and Napoli in Race to sign Uruguay’s World Cup hero

Edinson Cavani is a target for both Juventus and Napoli this summer and the PSG man’s brace for Uruguay against Portugal showed why.  The striker is now 31 years old, but his work rate remains second to none and he scored two sensational goals in tonight’s 2-1 World Cup Round of 16 victory. He also pulled up with a muscular problem in the second half and faces a race against time to be fit for the quarter-final against France in six days.

“I felt a twinge at the back of the thigh. I hope it’s nothing,” he told reporters after the game. I have no words to describe how I feel. I’m happy and we have to keep dreaming. Meanwhile, this form has only boosted existing reports of a return to Serie A for El Matador. He shot to fame at Palermo in January 2007, moving on to Napoli in the summer of 2010 for €17m.

By 2013, his price-tag had flown to €65m as he completed the transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. Max Allegri has suggested Cavani for Juventus if Gonzalo Higuain were to leave, but it’s reported the Uruguayan told friends he couldn’t play for another Serie A club after Napoli. There could be a twist in the tale, because Mediaset reported this evening that Napoli are keeping a close eye on Cavani’s situation. New Coach Carlo Ancelotti wants a more classic striker than Dries Mertens and he would fit the bill. Also, in a recent interview, President Aurelio De Laurentiis confessed “Ancelotti told me that to win we need a 31-year-old in the side.” Cavani turned 31 in February.
