Meet the World Cup Golden Boys

During each edition of the World Cup, FIFA awards an award to most outstanding player in the tournament. The winner is selected from a shortlist drawn up by the FIFA technical committee, as voted by representatives of the media.

Brazil has the record of most winners with seven.Here are the Golden Boys from the last five World cups.

Ronaldo-1998 (Brazil)

The Brazilian maestro scored five as Brazil were 3-0 losers in the final to a Zidane inspired France who were also the hosts. He later joined Inter Milan from Barcelona for a World record fee.

Olivier Kahn-2002(Germany)
The legendary keeper made oustanding saves during the tournament but could not deny Ronaldo and Brazil as Germany lost 2-0 in the Final.

Zidane-2006 (France)
Having come out of retirement to Captain his National team, Zizou defiled age and put in good performances after the other. His crowning moment came in the quarter finals where he dominated a Brazil side with the likes of Ronaldo,Ronaldinho,Maicon and Roberto Carlos. However with the final against Italy locked at 1-1 and deep into extra time, the then 36 year old was sent off for headbutting Italy’s Marco Marterazzi. France went on to lose 5-3 on penalties while Zidane retired after the finals(for good).

Diego Forlan- 2010(Uruguay)
The former Manchester united forward scored Five Uruguay exceeded expectations to reach the Semi-finals.They eventually finished Fourth losing 3-2 to Germany in the Bronze match.

Lionel Messi-2014(Argentina)
Yet another losing finalist won the Golden Ball in 2014. The Barcelona forward Was involved in five goals(4 goals 1 assist) as his Argentina side failed at the last hurdle to a Mario Goetze goal.
