AFC Leopards: Mashemeji Derby is on, we wont release players for ‘funny friendlies’

AFC Leopards has maintained that Mashemeji Derby will go on as planned and they will not release their players for National duties as they will also be participating in Super Cup on third June after the derby.

Football Kenya President Nick Mwendwa talked tough saying that the tie must be postponed to allow players feature for the National team in friendly matches against Swaziland and Equatorial Guinea.

Leopards in a statement written by Secretary-General Oscar Igaida have vowed not to let their players honor the call-up.

The statement read:

We shall not release our players for the Harambee Stars friendlies due to the match and super cup set to start on 3rd June 2018. We condemn in the strongest terms possible the Statements attributed to FKF president that the Derby will not be played in a ‘Funny Stadium’, didn’t he know Bukhungu was a “Funny Stadium” when CECAFA was hosted there?”

“We are going ahead with preparations and we shall not participate in “Funny Friendlies” which do not fall under FIFA calendar for the National teams,” the club’s stern statement read further, adding that the venue had been secured, and security arrangements made.
