A man in Homa Bay County has been injured and his property destroyed for failing to slaughter a cow at uncles’ funeral.
Otieno Nyabwala of Kobanda village, Gem East Location in Rangwe sub-county was assaulted and his property worth Sh2 million destroyed for failing to slaughter a cow to feed mourners.
According to his clan members were on a mission to kill him for not feeding the morners. They took him to his uncle’s grave where they he was ordered him to sit on the ground instead of a chair and explain why he did not slaughter a cow at the funeral as it is in their culture.
“I told them that I did not slaughter a cow due to financial constraints. They ignored my reasons and caned me besides slapping me until I sustained injuries,”said Nyabwala
“They threatened to kill me but I had to humble myself and pleaded for mercy. I later got an opportunity and took off into the darkness,” Nyabwala said.
He rushed back home, took his five children and wife Emilly to seek refuge at a friend’s home in another village.
The following day, he got information that the mob had destroyed everything in his homestead besides demolishing his semi-permanent house.
The destruction led to loss of property worth Sh2 million.
