Everton again for Gor Mahia? Not that fast though

Kenya’s football giants Gor Mahia could have a rematch with EPL side Everton this year, if they successfully defend the Sportpesa Super Cup in Nairobi between 3rd and 10th June.

Betting firm SportPesa has planned an eight-team invitational tournament which will see the winner travel to England to play Everton FC later in the month. The tournament is expected to bring together four teams from Kenya, three from Tanzania mainland and one from Zanzibar, as confirmed by the organizers on Thursday morning.

“We have selected the best of the best to take part in the tournament, based on our regional partnerships as well as on sporting merit,” organizers and gaming firm SportPesa Chief Marketing Officer, Kelvin Twissa stated during the launch in Nairobi.

The winner of the tournament will, in addition to traveling to England, pocket USD30,000 (KSh3m) in token prize money. AFC Leopards will be hoping to improve this time after falling to Gor Mahia last year while Kariobangi Sharks FC and Kakamega Homeboyz FC expected to be included.

Tanzanian giants, Yanga SC and Simba SC will be joined by compatriots Singida United FC with Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi (JKU) from Zanzibar completing the roster. Losing finalists with pocket USD10,000 (KSh1m) and third finishers USD7,500 (KSh750,000) while the fourth placed side taking home USD5,000 (KSh500,000).
