Trump asks African nations to support 2026 World Cup bid

US President Donald Trump has asked African countries to back the United States, Canada and Mexico in their joint bid for the 2026 Fifa World Cup. He made this call for support earlier this week while hosting the Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari at the White House on Monday.

The USA previously held the popular tournament in 1994 where Brazil emerged winners after defeating Italy, making it one of the most memorable World Cup finals.

Meanwhile Morocco has also taken interest in hosting the 2026 World Cup and has already gained support from several countries from Africa, the Gulf region and some parts of Europe.

Trump needs support from Africa to win the 2026 World Cup hosting bid. “I hope all African countries and countries throughout the world, that we also will be supporting you and that they will likewise support us in our bid, along with Canada and Mexico, for the 2026 World Cup,” Trump said during a joint press conference in the White House. “We will be watching very closely, and any help they can give us in that bid, we would appreciate,” he said.

Voting for the 2026 World Cup hosting right will take place Wednesday, June 13, in Moscow, during world football governing body Fifa’s annual congress.
