Developed healthy nation as Sonko orders release of patients; unpaid bills

In the past one week, hospitals have been offering good will services by releasing patients who have been detained over unpaid medical bills.

Speaking during Good Deeds Day celebrations held along City Hall Way on Sunday, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko ordered for the release of patients held in county health facilities over unpaid medical bills worth over Sh1 million.

The governor directed the Health Services executive Mohammed Dagane to effect the order and ensure all the patients who are unable to clear their medical bills are released unconditionally.

He, in the process, asked Mr. Dagane to lias with his Finance counterpart Winfred Kathagu to come up with ways of covering the costs of the released patients.

The Governor said that about 50 patients from Mbagathi and Mama Lucy Hospitals have already been released with more set to get their accrued bills wavered.

“As a good gesture, I’m directing my CECs of Health and Finance to devise ways of covering the costs of patients held at our medical facilities due to lack of fees. I’m therefore ordering the immediate and unconditional discharge of the patients at Mbagathi and at Mama Lucy Hospitals,” said Sonko.
