PSG star told to leave club after ‘liking’ Man Utd’s post

Thomas Meunier has provoked the ire of Paris Saint-Germain fans after liking a post on Instagram celebrating Manchester United’s win over Watford – only a few weeks after losing to the Red Devils in the Champions League. The Belgian defender has made no secret of his support for United, having followed them since he was a kid, and he was just as excited as every other fan to see how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got on in his first match as full-time manager.

Despite Watford having a number of chances, goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in either half were enough to secure all three points as the first match of Solskjaer’s permanent reign started with a 2-1 win. Meunier clearly enjoyed it too, liking a post from Manchester United’s official Instagram account after the game along with over half a million other fans.

But the 27-year-old’s social media activity did not go down well with his own fans, who are still not over the side’s Champions League round of 16 exit at the hands of Solskjaer’s men, losing 3-1 at the Parc des Princes to exit the competition on away goals. Some fans tweeted Meunier telling him to leave the club, while others hoped that United would take him off their hands in the summer.

The Belgian has been rotated in and out of the team this season by Thomas Tuchel, playing 19 times in Ligue 1 but featuring for just 20 minutes across both legs of the Champions League tie with United. He has been mooted as a potential replacement for Antonio Valencia at United, with Thilo Kherer and Dani Alves often getting the nod ahead of him in the second half of the season, while he has suggested in the past he would be open to moving.

PSG defender Thomas Meunier likes Man Utd post

‘I’m very happy in Paris and if I finish my career there, it won’t be a disappointment, far from it,’ he said in 2017. ‘But, if one day, I had to leave Paris, why not? ‘On the other side of the channel, there are the stadiums, the fans, and I’ve never hidden that I’m a big fan of Manchester United, which remains, in my eyes, the real reference in the world of football.’
