The race to be the Premier League’s leading scorer is proving as fascinating as the duel for the title.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero is leading the way with 18 though there are four players all on 17. Mohamed Salah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sadio Mane and Harry Kane have scored 17 times this season.

Raheem Sterling is not far behind with 15 while Chelsea’s Eden Hazard would look to be something of an outsider with 13.

But there’s a strong argument forming for England skipper Kane. He has built a reputation as a slow starter every season, with stats continually trotted out about how he doesn’t score in August.

In contrast, he finishes seasons like a train and his current form for club and country is simply stunning.

Kane has scored one goal in his last five games – two of them were for England while one came in the Champions League success at Borussia Dortmund. Dig a little deeper and Kane’s form is even more impressive. He has scored at least one goal in 12 of the last 14 games – a record would have surely been even better had he not missed several weeks through injury.

The Spurs striker is currently scoring a goal every 132 minutes which while impressive, is not as clinical as Aguero; the Argentinian scores a goal every 107 minutes.

There’s another player with a better goals to minute ratio than Kane – Aubameyang averages a goal every 130 minutes.

Spurs’ remaining league games sees them at home five times. Providing they can move into their new stadium with the minimum of fuss, Kane will be hoping to make the most of home advantage.

At the end of last season, Kane scored in three from four of Spurs’ final three Premier League games of the season before taking his form to the World Cup in Russia where he ended up winning the Golden Boot.
