Why Manchester United will have to spend big to get a reliable defender

Manchester United are gazing at a un-secure future t the defence line if they really want to win the Premier League any time soon which is one of the areas the team leak.

Manchester United will need to eclipse a world record fee paid by rivals Liverpool if they are to land their number one defensive target this summer.

The Red Devils are thought to be continuing their pursuit of Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, and will step up their bid to sign the England international when the transfer window opens.

Speculation was rife all last summer linking Maguire with a move to Old Trafford, then Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho known to be an admirer of the centre-half as he looked to bolster his defensive options.

Mourinho failed to land Maguire in the summer the defender coming to prominence after a fine display at the World Cup in Russia or add any defensive cover with the exception of young Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot.

And it is now being reported how much Leicester City would demand for their player. Reports had suggested that United could sign Maguire for around £65m but the Daily Star say that the Foxes have slapped a £90m fee on the dominant centre-back.

That figure would eclipse the world record fee for a defender of £75m paid by Liverpool to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk.
