DETAILS: Harambee Stars Players Refused to Board Ethiopian Plane to Ghana

Sources within the national team Harambee Stars, intimate that some players were not ready to board an Ethiopian Airways Plane to Ghana on Thursday.

The team left JKIA for a crucial AFCON 2019 qualifier but their was some drama involved in the whole trip.

A source close to the team who spoke to NairobiNews revealed that a number of players had to be begged to board the Ethiopia Airlines.

Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 (ET-AVM), the same type of aircraft that crashed in Ethiopia on 10 March 2019, is seen at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when it was first delivered to Ethiopia on 02 July 2018 (issued 10 March 2019). Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 en route to Nairobi, Kenya, crashed near Bishoftu, some 50km outside of the capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 10 March 2019. All passengers onboard the scheduled flight ET 302 carrying 149 passengers and 8 crew members, have died, the airlines says. The source noted that two senior players in the team approached the Federation to ask if they could shift to another airline.

“Two senior players asked the federation to change the airline but it wasn’t possible. It was late and there were no finances. Ethiopian Airlines provide the cheapest option by the way,” said the source.

It seems not many people have come to terms with the recent Ethiopian air crash that claimed 157 lifes.

Kenya was the most affected country, having lost 36 people, in the crash involving the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft.

For Africa’s largest airline, the crash has brought undue attention to its regional and global operations, its future aspirations, the impending plans to open itself up for private investment.

But the national team which include Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama landed safely in Accra on Thursday despite the fears.

They will face the hosts in a match coach Sebastien Migne says they have no pressure to win.

“We are not under pressure. Even if it were a crucial qualification match, we still would have taken it easy. This will be a chance for me to gauge the players ahead of AFCON,” said coach Harambee Stars coach Sébastien Migné as the team jetted out to Accra.
